Addressing the thorny problem of biodiversity loss

Addressing the thorny problem of biodiversity loss

  • Cambridge Conservation Initiative

The Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) is a collaboration between the University and nine leading, internationally focused biodiversity conservation organisations based in and around Cambridge.

CCI brings together representatives of governments, intergovernmental bodies, the private sector, academia and other members of the conservation community and is increasingly being called upon to provide scientific evidence, analysis and convening opportunities worldwide.

In 2012 work commenced on the Conservation Campus, a hub for biodiversity conservation expertise in Cambridge, which opened in 2016. This exciting building was made possible through significant investment from the MAVA Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation and the A G Leventis Foundation. Practicing what the CCI preaches, the Campus includes measures to encourage urban biodiversity and create an exemplar green roof and also aims to maximise collaboration between its inhabitants, from airy working spaces to a multi-purpose common room.

The Campus was launched in April 2013 in the presence of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and Sir David Attenborough. It is home to over 500 conservation professionals from within the University and the Initiative’s partner organisations – and acts as a magnet for biodiversity expertise worldwide.
