Four MPhil scholarships and one PhD will be available to qualifying Cambridge students for study in autumn 2021.

Following the success of the first two cohorts of DeepMind scholars in computer science, the artificial intelligence company has renewed its commitment to support a series of scholarships for under-represented postgraduates at Cambridge. These scholarships aim to attract talented UK and international postgraduates who identify as female and/or are of Black or minority ethnic backgrounds, groups who are under-represented in the study of Advanced Computer Science and Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence at Cambridge.

DeepMind is committed to increasing representation in artificial intelligence and machine learning. We are proud to partner with Cambridge in offering these scholarships, which provide the opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to gain a graduate education and make valuable contributions to the AI community.

The DeepMind Masters scholarships now cover programmes in Advanced Computer Science and Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence, taught in the Departments of Computer Science and Technology, and Engineering, respectively. The scholarships are available to qualifying students wishing to undertake their degrees in autumn 2021.

Helen Pennant, Director of the Cambridge Trust, which administers the DeepMind scholarships, commented: “The DeepMind scholarships are aimed at students who would not be able to study at Cambridge without financial assistance.  They can change lives and help to bring highly talented students to Cambridge who would otherwise not have had the opportunity. We’re delighted that DeepMind has chosen to continue and expand this incredibly important scholarship programme.”

Professor Ann Copestake, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Technology said, “Since 2018, the scholarships from DeepMind have played a significant role in attracting a more diverse cohort of talented students to our MPhil in Advanced Computer Science, regardless of their financial circumstances. They are an important part of the Department’s commitment to increasing diversity among students and staff, which we see as vital in our pursuit of excellence."

Applicants for the MPhil Advanced Computer Science should apply for admission to the University of Cambridge by 7 January 2021.
