In 2016 the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology will bid farewell to central Cambridge and move into its new £60m purpose-built home on the West Cambridge Science and Technology Campus.

Professor Clemens Kaminski, head of the Laser Analytics Group and Director of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Sensor Technologies and Applications said: “We are grateful to the Wolfson Foundation for generously co-funding the new Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology building, which will benefit the Centre enormously with new facilities.

Imaging the future

“State-of-the-art research laboratories and infrastructure will give our students the very best research training. Over the coming five years we expect a minimum of 50 PhD students to progress their research within the Centre and to benefit from its world-class research education in worldclass facilities.”

Professor Kaminski’s group conducts pioneering work in the development and application of modern laser spectroscopic methods to explore chemical processes. The applications of this research are extremely wide-ranging, from the design of low-emission aeroplane engines to the design and testing of new drugs. Their groundbreaking application of new techniques to study Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases was cited in the 2014 award of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
