Alan was brought up in Bath, where he started a youth orchestra while still in his teens. He read Music at Cambridge (Jesus College). After four years of teaching music in Belfast, he joined BBC Belfast as a radio producer with responsibility for the BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra. Later he moved to television production of music with the BBC in London. Having taken early retirement from the BBC he became a freelance conductor, working largely in eastern Europe. He recently attracted a lot of attention following his discovery in the Cambridge University Library of Vaughan Williams’ doctoral exercise, which he edited, conducted and recorded. A Cambridge Mass is one of several Vaughan Williams pieces he has recorded for Albion Records.
