The Global Humanities Initiative
The Global Humanities Initiative brings together different centres of scholarly excellence, each springing from different historical trajectories and operating in distinct contexts.
“The humanities are precious. They are an archive some three millennia old of how people have conceived of, critiqued, and modelled themselves; of how they have thought about the Universe, their societies, and themselves; and of how that thinking has been expressed and has produced change. They are a vibrant chronicle of what it is, and could be, to be human.”
The way we teach and research the humanities is ripe for change: students are demanding a more diverse and globally-aware curriculum, and we imperil our own future if we do not build strong connections with rapidly emerging intellectual centres in China, Africa, India, the Middle East and South America. Global challenges reveal the urgency of culturally informed discussions and jointly developed solutions, from the climate crisis, social polarisations, and disruptions by new technologies to the divisive legacies of armed conflicts and global inequalities.
The Global Humanities Initiative aims to promote greater cross-cultural understanding and encourage new ways of thinking about the human condition.
We are seeking to develop a five-year programme of activity to root global perspectives into the mainstream research and teaching agendas of Cambridge and to develop our partner network further. We are seeking visionary philanthropic partners who are inspired by this growth opportunity to join us.
