Supporting the generation of evidence that translates directly into better care, particularly in maternity and women’s health.

The loss of Professor Tim Draycott (1964 – 2025) is a tragedy for his family, friends, the academic and professional community, and patient care.

A visionary in patient safety, Tim's work as a consultant obstetrician at Southmead Hospital in Bristol made a difference to the many families he cared for over decades of active practice. But his impact was global. He was a key figure in the development of PROMPT, the multi-professional maternity emergencies training package that has produced demonstrable improvements in outcomes across the globe. In his many policy roles, including as past Vice-President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and senior clinical advisor to NHS Resolution, he championed collaborative, evidence-based approaches and insisted on equity and inclusion.

His partnership with THIS Institute (The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute) in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge followed on from his Health Foundation Improvement Science Fellowship. Tim worked with THIS Institute from the very beginning. His collaborative projects with THIS Institute were innovative, creative, and impactful, and characterised by his absolute commitment to ensuring the best possible care for everyone. He combined his extraordinary abilities in connecting people with very rare skills in combining multiple forms of evidence into highly practical, action-focused programmes that changed practice. His legacy is an unrivalled body of work that will continue to touch countless lives in the future.

The Tim Draycott Scholarship Fund* at THIS Institute, University of Cambridge, has been established to ensure his vision lives on. It will support the work that Tim and the institute championed together: generating evidence that translates directly into better care, particularly in maternity and women’s health. It will enable the next generation to carry forward Tim's mission, which is a fitting tribute to a remarkable clinician, educator, and advocate.

When people imagine the future of healthcare, they often picture breakthrough drugs, advanced technologies, and cutting-edge treatments. How care is organised and delivered can have just as much, if not more, impact on patient care and outcomes.
