The Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence is a highly interdisciplinary research centre exploring the nature, ethics and impact of artificial intelligence (AI)

CFI is based at the University of Cambridge, with spokes at Imperial College London and University of California, Berkeley, as well as close links with industry and policymakers. CFI brings together academics from a variety of disciplines as diverse as machine learning, philosophy, history, literary studies, engineering, media studies and design in order to explore the possibilities of AI in both the short and long term.

As Professor Stephen Hawking noted at the Centre’s launch in 2016, AI is “likely to be either the best or worst thing ever to happen to humanity, so there’s huge value in getting it right.” Our research is dedicated to ensuring AI is a force for good and it’s structured in a series of research programmes that cover a wide range of projects. Our work explores vital questions about the risks and opportunities emerging with AI in the near, mid- and long-term. These range from algorithmic transparency and the nature of intelligence to automated warfare, consciousness, social AI, feminist AI, AI-amplified injustice, global and pluriversal design, and the implications of AI for democracy, geopolitics, and the natural environment.

LCFI seeks partnerships with philanthropic donors and companies that share our mission to advance AI as a force for good. Support from our partners will ensure that the Centre has the resources needed for innovative and interdisciplinary research.
