Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology
At the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB), we use fundamental science to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges
Our multidisciplinary department brings together expertise from chemical engineering, biotechnology, chemistry, physics and applied mathematics—all with a shared focus on real-world impact in sustainability and healthcare.
Through our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as our cutting-edge research and Centre for Doctoral Training, we’re equipping the next generation to shape a cleaner, healthier future.
Driven by curiosity, driving change
Watch our short video to see how we’re tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges—and how your support helps us go further.
Turning brilliant ideas into real-world impact
We bring together scientists and engineers to solve urgent problems—from cutting carbon to improving global health.
What we work on
Our work covers everything from lab-based fundamentals to technologies already making a difference. It’s all focused on two big themes:
Sustainability
We’re rethinking how the world produces energy, materials and chemicals—from greener industrial processes to new technologies for a circular economy.
Healthcare
From faster diagnostics and smarter drug delivery to tissue engineering and bioelectronics, our research is helping to transform medicine.
How we work
We’re home to at least 25 research groups, each tackling a specific challenge—from synthetic biology to reaction engineering.
It’s deeply collaborative. Groups share tools, ideas and expertise, often working together across disciplines to come up with solutions no single lab could achieve alone.
Why support matters
Philanthropy helps us to:
- Fast-track ideas with real-world impact
- Support the next generation of researchers
- Create spaces that bring great minds together
From funding early-stage research to supporting student bursaries, every gift makes a difference.
Spotlight: The John Davidson Fund
Established in memory of Professor John Davidson, a pioneering chemical engineer and inspirational teacher, this fund supports graduate students at CEB, helping the brightest minds pursue research that could shape the future.
