The Cambridge Clinical Multiple Sclerosis Research Group, based at the University of Cambridge, brings together clinicians and researchers with a single shared objective: to prevent and reverse disability in multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica and related conditions.

MS is a lifelong neurological condition affecting over 150,000 people in the UK, causing disability through immune-mediated damage to the brain and spinal cord. Despite significant advances in treatments that suppress the immune attacks driving the disease, many people with MS still experience progressive worsening of their symptoms over time, and for them effective therapies remain out of reach.

The Group pursues this challenge across six connected research themes. These include:

  • running clinical trials to identify and test drugs that can repair myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibres that is damaged in MS.
  • using large datasets and artificial intelligence to help personalise treatment decisions for people with MS.
  • developing better imaging and measurement tools to detect repair happening in the brain.
  • investigating why the brain's capacity for repair declines with age and how this might be reversed.
  • studying MS and related conditions in children
  • and working to understand and address inequalities in access to MS care.

Together, these strands form a comprehensive programme that takes discoveries from the laboratory all the way through to patient benefit. Supporting this research will accelerate the development of treatments that go beyond managing MS to actively repairing the damage it causes, for people of all ages and at all stages of the disease.

A donation to the Cambridge Clinical Multiple Sclerosis Research Group supports MS research across all of these themes. If you would like to direct your gift towards a particular area of work, you can also choose to support an individual research group.
