A new postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Engineering to be funded by Tencent
Technology giant Tencent has made a generous gift to fund a new five-year postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Engineering, one of the leading centres of engineering in the world.
This will be the first funded fellowship of the new Dowling Postdoctoral Research Fellowship programme. The Fellowships will enable the Department to recruit the world’s most talented early career engineering researchers, give them the support and freedom to take their ideas to a new level, and equip them with the skills and experience to go on to become global leaders with profound impact on the world stage.
Named in honour of Professor Dame Ann Dowling, the Department of Engineering’s first female Professor and former Head of Department, as well as the first female president of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the new programme will offer a unique opportunity for the world’s most talented engineering researchers to form the next generation of engineering leaders. Dowling Fellows will have full Principal Investigator status in one of the Department’s core research areas, granting them five years to build their portfolio of research rather than the usual three. This first Fellowship will be based within Electrical Engineering and will focus on developing a new area of expertise around Quantum Technology with an emphasis on Quantum Computing. The Dowling Fellow will act as a key contact point connecting other areas of Quantum Technology research around the University.
The aim of the Dowling Fellowship programme is to support researchers to bring their ideas from the lab to reality and for their research to have a transformative effect on society in areas from smart city infrastructure to radical new medical treatments enabled with bioengineering for drug delivery.

By funding these posts for five years, we hope to attract the very best candidates across the spectrum of the Department’s research activities.
