We are delighted to announce that the University of Cambridge has been successful in securing two substantial gifts from the Wolfson Foundation — an independent, grant-making charity, which funds programmes and activities across the UK with the aim of improving society through education and research.

Thanks to these new grants, the Foundation’s total giving to Collegiate Cambridge now exceeds £50 million over the past six decades. The Wolfson Foundation is among the most significant supporters of Cambridge in the modern era.

The Foundation confirmed that it will continue to support the Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities, with the eighth cohort of recipients to start in the 2020/21 academic year.

Cambridge is one of just nine universities selected to host Wolfson Postgraduate Scholars. Three doctoral students nominated by the University will receive an award of up to £29,500 per year to cover the full cost of a PhD over three years.

Today’s announcement also confirmed that the Foundation will contribute £1 million towards the cost of the Advanced Instrumentation Facility within the new Cavendish Laboratory, which will be one of the largest concentrations of physical scientists in Europe.

The Advanced Instrumentation Facility will provide an essential shared physical space for teams based at the new Cavendish. It will be dedicated to the invention, development, prototyping, assembly and delivery of unique instrumentation for large projects in the areas of High Energy Physics and Astrophysics. This facility will be crucial to University’s ability to attract national and international collaborations and contribute to major new discoveries.

We are incredibly grateful to the Wolfson Foundation for their longstanding support of our academic vision. We are honoured to have maintained such a successful partnership with the Foundation.
