Space to thrive: finding opportunity in sanctuary
Cambridge is now an accredited University of Sanctuary, committed to taking positive action to include and welcome displaced people.
Alongside direct scholarship support, creating an environment in which displaced students can thrive is essential.
Cambridge will strive to go above and beyond to make its world-leading education and research accessible and fulfilling for displaced people. Philanthropy will help the University sustain these efforts in the long term.
Our planned initiatives:
- To create a robust programme for displaced students, led by an International Response Project Manager and with centralised support for all those who need it.
- To provide specialist professional training in working with displaced students to all student-facing staff, so that students feel welcomed and supported.
- To offer students the opportunity to attend the annual University of Sanctuary Conference, as well as other conferences and events.
- To provide comprehensive financial and personal support, recognising the additional complexities of arriving in the UK following displacement.
- To offer a mentoring programme, using the existing highly successful Mastercard and Gates scholarship mentorship programmes as a guide.
The University has provided initial funding for the programme, but philanthropy will allow for a longer-term programme and make the experience for displaced students at Cambridge as positive as possible.
