History of art
The University of Cambridge’s Department of History of Art is redefining how art and architecture are studied and understood.
Building on its strength in European traditions, the Department is expanding its focus to reflect the full diversity of global artistic practice. New areas of expertise, ranging from Islamic Art to African and Caribbean Art, are reshaping the field and placing Cambridge at the forefront of global art history.
Expanding knowledge and perspectives
To deepen this global vision, the Department is seeking support for new academic posts in key underrepresented areas, including, but not limited to:
- Byzantine Art, exploring connections across the eastern Mediterranean and the wider world.
- Art of the Americas, examining Indigenous traditions alongside the complexities of colonial histories.
These posts will broaden teaching, challenge established narratives, and open up new ways of understanding visual culture.
Supporting the next generation
Philanthropic support will also ensure that students can thrive and take their place in shaping the future of the discipline by supporting:
- Postgraduate studentships for the MPhil in Global History of Art and Architecture, enabling the most talented students worldwide to study at Cambridge
- Undergraduate internships, giving hands-on experience in museums, galleries, and heritage organisations
These opportunities are essential to making the field more inclusive, accessible, and globally connected.
