CUBC: building on a historic legacy

  • decorative

We honour our heritage, live our present and have a shared vision for the future

Our mission at CUBC is to equip student-athletes to win boat races, prioritising excellence, wellbeing and inclusivity. This means:

  • Excelling on the water by winning and off the water by the highest academic achievement, both underpinned by collaboration, resilience, teamwork, perseverance and discipline
  • Delivering competitive and learning experiences of life-long benefit
  • Giving the broadest range of people the opportunity to benefit from the transformational experience of rowing for Cambridge
  • Developing a culture that provides equal access to facilities, equipment and coaching for the benefit of current and future student-athletes
  • Respecting each other, the traditions of the legacy clubs, the Boat Races and those we race
  • Protecting and supporting the mental health and physical wellbeing of student-athletes

CUBC: Pulling Together

A financial snapshot

Our approach to resource allocation builds on these values whilst maintaining our focus on the overall goal — to win! Together with our supporters, we aspire to build a strong financial base for the future. Our current financial plans are as follows:

  • The unified Club spends £650,000 in operating costs per annum and approximately £100,000 per annum in refreshing boats and equipment, giving a total expenditure of £750,000 per annum
  • Our key principles are that budgets and staffing levels for men and women are the same, student subscriptions are equal, and we are committed to improving the standards of equipment across all squads
  • The costs of delivering one of London's iconic sporting and cultural events with 250,000 spectators has increased significantly over the last 20 years, resulting in lower levels of income for the Club
  • To meet the challenge, we are putting in place plans to diversify revenue to ensure we have a financially sustainable future — including expanding donation income from our supporters and increasing the sale of merchandise
  • The University has now also committed £100,000 per year to the Club for ten years, in addition to supporting us in other ways

The importance of philanthropy

We want to ensure our programmes remain world-class with funding to enable these ambitions. Our current budgetary shortfall is approximately £300,000 per annum. This means that future philanthropic investment in the Club will be more impactful than ever before.

There is no doubt that this is an ambitious challenge, but diversifying our sources of revenue will put us on a financially stable footing, allowing us to maintain our focus on producing the best crews possible to compete in the Boat Races. We're only going to achieve these goals together, so thank you in advance for your involvement.
