Mental health affects everyone, directly or indirectly, shaping how we live, learn, work, and connect with others across every stage of life.

In the Department of Psychiatry, we take a collaborative approach to understanding mental health and wellbeing. Our researchers work alongside people with lived experience, patients, healthcare providers, policymakers and international partners to deepen understanding of the mind, brain and behaviour, and to improve mental health care and support.

Our work spans the full spectrum of psychiatry research: from exploring how brain networks develop and change across the lifespan, to understanding the biological, psychological and social factors that influence mental health. We use data science and digital technologies to improve patient experience, better understand patterns of care, and help shape more personalised and effective mental health services.

Patients and participants are central to our research. Through clinical studies and trials, we work closely with individuals and communities to ensure our research reflects real-world experiences and priorities. This partnership approach helps us develop research that is not only scientifically rigorous, but also meaningful, practical and capable of improving lives.

By bringing together neuroscience, clinical research, psychology, public health and lived experience, we aim to create knowledge that informs practice, policy and care. This improves mental health outcomes in ways that are thoughtful, evidence-based and centred on people.

Why your support matters

Philanthropic support gives us the freedom to pursue ambitious interdisciplinary research, develop innovative new approaches, and support the next generation of mental health researchers and clinicians.

Your support can help strengthen partnerships across academia, healthcare and government, enabling research that improves understanding, informs policy and contributes to better mental health care and experiences for people and communities around the world.
