Seventh-century manuscript is witness to development of the New Testament

A seventh-century manuscript will remain in Cambridge thanks to a gift from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF).

The NHMF’s generous grant helped Cambridge’s University Library reach its £1.1m target and safeguard the seventh-century Codex Zacynthius palimpsest.

The palimpsest – or manuscript from which the text has been scraped or washed off in order for it to be used again – is an invaluable witness to the development of the New Testament, and will now undergo multispectral imaging to recover hidden text and generate research.
